Mission

To transform lives and communities with innovative and collaborative therapy, training and research.

Vision

The Houston Galveston Institute is a recognized leader in the dynamic evolution of innovative, effective and accessible psychotherapy approaches.

History

The Houston Galveston Institute (formerly the Galveston Family Institute) was founded in 1978 by Harlene Anderson, Ph.D., Paul Dell, Ph.D., Harold Goolishian, Ph.D. and George Pulliam, M.S.W. to meet the demands of mental health professionals seeking to increase their understanding of families and further develop their skills in systems-oriented therapy with individuals, couples, families and groups.

Our collaborative approach to therapy and our collaborative language systems were developed by Dr. Anderson and Dr. Goolishian in the mid 1980s. Collaborative therapy is now recognized as one of the current schools of family therapy and is included in graduate school textbooks.

In addition to our internationally recognized contributions to the advancement of theory, psychotherapy practice and research, HGI formalized the Multiple Impact Therapy research effort pioneered in Galveston at the University of Texas Medical Branch in 1954, which was one of the earliest federally funded family therapy projects in the U.S.

About Us

The Houston Galveston Institute (HGI) is a non-profit organization, supported by donations and volunteers, that offers a unique method of collaborative counseling and postmodern therapy to individuals, families and communities of all socioeconomic backgrounds. We work with clients within a respectful, cooperative partnership that holds their ideas and expertise in high regard, and that encourages them to access their own natural resources and abilities to develop solutions to their problems.

Collaborative, Community Outreach

HGI’s collaborative efforts have resulted in response-driven programs such as the Rolling Conversations Project (a mobile mental health unit) that serves those living in Houston who have been impacted by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

We also contract with numerous community agencies, including Harris County Domestic Relations Office (DRO), Office of Attorney General - Texas, and Communities in Schools, from which we receive many referrals. It is always our goal when working with agencies and referrals to foster and maintain a collaborative relationship in which the ideas and concerns of all parties are included in the therapy sessions.

HGI also provides various training programs for mental health professionals who want to develop a collaborative and postmodern approach to therapeutic work with individuals, couples, families, groups, organizations and community.
