Internships and Practicums
For students in masters and doctoral level programs, such as counseling, psychology, social work, and marriage and family therapy, we offer graduate training through internships and practicum.
Graduate students who are interested in discussing practicum or internships should contact Sue Levin, Ph.D.
Internships
HGI internships are typically set up for a one-year period, to meet the requirements of masters or doctoral level graduate programs in family therapy, counseling, psychology and social work. We believe that interns greatly benefit from being immersed in our programs and practices, so a commitment of three days or evenings per week is required.
At HGI, interns experience clinical work in a variety of settings and become part of reflecting teams as well as therapeutic teams in co-therapy. Additionally, interns are involved with grant writing projects, special event planning, community outreach, and workshop presentations with HGI faculty and staff.
If you are not familiar with Collaborative Therapy, we highly recommend that you do some Reading prior to applying for an internship. Collaborative Therapy is a specific philosophical approach and practice that is rooted in Postmodernism. HGI is a learning environment for this way of doing therapy, and not others.
Most internships begin in the summer, with the application process beginning February 1, unless otherwise arranged through an affiliated university program. To apply, submit a letter of intent expressing your interest in and expectations of an internship at HGI, as well as a curriculum vita. Once you are contacted for an interview, we will request three letters of recommendation. Interviews are scheduled no later than April 1. A limited number of internships are available per year, due to the intensive training that is built into the process.
Masters Level
HGI serves as an internship site for local universities including University of Houston – Clear Lake, Our Lady of the Lake University – Houston, and Sam Houston State University. Practicum
HGI operates an internship model for the majority of graduate level training. Occasionally practicum students are accepted, but they often need to agree to special arrangements to fulfill our recommendations and requirements.
HGI is the practicum site for Masters of Science Psychology students at Our Lady of the Lake University – Houston (OLLU). The practicum teams are run under the auspices of OLLU in partnership with HGI.
Additional Residency Program
Visitor Study Program
HGI offers a Visitor Study Program for clinicians and teachers who want to study collaborative therapy practices for defined time periods. Visitors may attend HGI on a daily, weekly or monthly basis, and are invited to observe and participate in on-going clinical and training programs, including: therapy sessions, teamwork, seminars and case consultation. International visitors have the opportunity to learn about the history of systems theory and family therapy in the United States, and about the current psychotherapy theory and practice in both private and public sectors.
